Converting between Aida counts

Converting a cross stitch design from one Aida count to another is simpler than it sounds, because the pattern itself doesn't change — only the fabric does. The number of stitches stays fixed; what changes is how many of those stitches fit into each inch. To find the finished size on any count, divide the stitch count by the fabric count. A 140-stitch-wide design is 140 ÷ 14 = 10 inches on 14 count, but only 140 ÷ 18 ≈ 7.8 inches on 18 count.

This is why the same chart looks so different on different fabric. Going to a higher count (16, 18, 22) shrinks the finished piece and adds fine detail; dropping to a lower count (11, 14) makes it bigger and easier on the eyes. If you're matching a design to a specific hoop or frame, scan down the table above until the size fits, then buy that count. When you're happy with the count, head to the fabric size calculator to add a margin and get the exact piece of fabric to cut.

Frequently asked questions

Does changing Aida count change my stitch count?
No. The stitch count (how many stitches wide and tall the pattern is) stays exactly the same on every fabric. Only the finished size changes, because higher counts fit more stitches per inch.
Is 18 count harder than 14 count?
18 count has smaller holes and smaller stitches, so it needs a finer needle and good light, but the pattern is identical. Many stitchers find 14 count easiest to learn on and move to 16 or 18 for finer detail.
How do I know my design’s stitch count?
It’s usually printed on the pattern as the "stitch count" or grid size, e.g. 120 × 160. If you only know the finished size at a certain count, enter it below and the converter works out the stitch count for you.
